WHAT IF young adults with autism could have the same opportunities as their siblings and peers – that they reach their full potential, making it possible for them to have active, engaging fulfilling lives? What if we could reduce the barriers in accessing opportunities and help them realize their dreams?
WHAT IF every young adult with autism could feel welcome and safe in an autism-friendly home that offers the opportunity for stimulation, socialization, vocational support and increased independence? What if they were supported by knowledgeable staff and supervised by a medical team specializing in mental health to guide them through difficulties when they arise?
WHAT IF adults with autism were offered the opportunity to develop skills and translate them into meaningful jobs? What if the community could create jobs for them that fit their skills, interests and abilities, allowing the to be contributing members of society? What if we could foster integration of community members into the lives of these adults and vice versa?
WHAT IF we could offer young adults with autism more opportunity to extend their experiences, socialize with other young adults and be a part of their community? Can we turn the Near West Side into the most autism-friendly space in Chicago?
WHAT IF we could underwrite research to train medical professionals to identify and provide mental health care to vulnerable young adults who are sucumbing to mental illness? What if we could provide create safe spaces in the ER and hospital for those in acute crises?
